BYD or Tesla in Switzerland: which one to choose in 2026?
In 2026, the contest between BYD and Tesla is intensifying on the Swiss market. In the first half of 2026, BYD almost caught up with Tesla in registrations, even though the Chinese brand has only been officially present in Switzerland since spring 2025. BYD sells directly through its subsidiary BYD Switzerland, with a range that runs from a city car to a plug-in hybrid SUV. Tesla keeps its strengths: brand recognition, its Supercharger network and established models. BYD vs Tesla: Key Figures in Switzerland in 2026
BYD almost caught up with Tesla in registrations in the first half of 2026, little more than a year after its official arrival on the Swiss market. In tax terms, both brands are treated the same way in Switzerland: since 1 January 2024, Switzerland has abolished customs duties on industrial products, cars included; it does, however, apply to electric vehicles a 4% automobile tax on the import price, plus 8.1% VAT.
The difference lies with the European Union, which applies to battery electric vehicles made in China the standard 10% import duty plus countervailing duties ranging from roughly 7.8% to 35.3% depending on the manufacturer (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754); for BYD, the countervailing duty is 17.0%. Tesla, for its part, remains a reference for charging with its Supercharger network.
Price and Range Comparison
At BYD, Swiss list prices start at CHF 20,990 for the Dolphin Surf city car, with a claimed range of 322 km. The Seal sedan and the Sealion 7 SUV both start at CHF 49,990, with up to 390 kW depending on the version and claimed ranges of up to 570 km and 502 km respectively. The Seal U DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV starts at CHF 42,990.

Sales Network and After-Sales Service
BYD is distributed in Switzerland by its direct subsidiary BYD Switzerland, which entrusts sales, test drives, delivery and servicing to partner dealers, including the Galliker Carplanet group. Tesla has its own stores and service centres, supplemented by mobile service and a centralised app. In both cases, the manufacturer's warranty is handled in Switzerland; its duration varies by model and component (vehicle, battery, motor) and should be checked on the official websites before buying.
Why BYD is Gaining Ground in Switzerland
In Switzerland, the tax advantage does not play out between BYD and Tesla, which pay the same import taxes. It plays out against the European Union: a BYD sold in Switzerland pays neither customs duty nor countervailing duty, only the 4% automobile tax and 8.1% VAT, whereas the same car bears the standard 10% duty and a 17.0% countervailing duty in the EU.
BYD also relies on the breadth of its range: city car (Dolphin Surf), sedan (Seal), electric SUV (Sealion 7) and plug-in hybrid SUV (Seal U DM-i). Tesla offers neither a city car nor a plug-in hybrid, which leaves BYD segments where the American brand is absent.
Which One to Choose in 2026?
The choice depends on your priorities. For an electric city car at around CHF 21,000 or a plug-in hybrid SUV, BYD offers models that Tesla does not have in its range. For an electric sedan or SUV at around CHF 50,000, compare the Seal and Sealion 7 with the Model 3 and Model Y at equivalent version and equipment.
If you prioritise the Supercharger network, brand recognition and a proven software experience, Tesla remains a safe choice. In both cases, check the current price on the official configurator and request a written offer before committing.
