Chinese Plug-in Hybrids in Switzerland: Which to Choose in 2026

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) of Chinese design are now present on the Swiss market, supported by official import networks. Like all Chinese-designed vehicles sold in Switzerland, they are not subject to the countervailing duties that the European Union applies to battery electric cars manufactured in China: Switzerland does not impose any. The offering runs from family SUVs to touring estates. Here is how to choose yours in 2026.

Why Switzerland is a favourable market for Chinese PHEVs

Since 1 January 2024, Switzerland has abolished customs duties on industrial products, cars included. It does, however, apply a 4% automobile tax on the import price to vehicles, plus VAT of 8.1%. By comparison, the European Union applies an ordinary customs duty of 10% on Chinese battery electric cars, plus countervailing duties ranging from approximately 7.8% to 35.3% depending on the manufacturer (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754). These countervailing duties do not apply in Switzerland.

Plug-in hybrids naturally find their place in this market: they combine an electric motor for daily journeys and a combustion engine for long distances, without depending on a dense charging infrastructure.

Another advantage: official import networks are in place. Buying a Chinese PHEV in Switzerland does not mean ordering a vehicle with Chinese specifications, but choosing a model approved for Switzerland, with the importer's service.

Chinese PHEVs available in Switzerland and their prices

Among the models listed in our comparator, several plug-in hybrids are already marketed in Switzerland. For BYD, the Seal U DM-i is a family SUV offered from CHF 42,990 (160 kW), and the Seal 6 DM-i Touring, a touring estate, from CHF 39,990 (135 kW). For MG, the HS PHEV, an SUV, is listed from CHF 34,990 (200 kW), while the MGS9 PHEV, a larger SUV, starts from CHF 38,990 (220 kW).

These 'from CHF' prices are those collected from Swiss importers and include VAT at 8.1%. They provide a useful basis for comparison, but equipment and versions can vary the final bill: always check the exact configuration with the official network.

As a benchmark, the electric SUVs MG IM6 and BYD Sealion 7 are each listed from CHF 49,990. For plug-in hybrids, our comparator does not show the electric range: ask the importer for the approved figures (electric range and consumption) of the version you are interested in.

Who imports these models and what warranties to check

Chinese plug-in hybrids sold in Switzerland go through identified official importers. BYD is distributed by BYD Switzerland (direct subsidiary), with partner dealers. MG goes through MG Motor Switzerland. Other Chinese-designed brands also have established networks: Maxus by Astara Longbridge AG, Zeekr by Emil Frey AG, Leapmotor by Leapmotor Switzerland (Stellantis / Emil Frey network), XPeng by Hedin Distribution AG, Voyah and M Hero by NOYO AG, smart by Smart Schweiz GmbH, Lynk & Co via Volvo Cars and its retail partners, JAC by JAC Schweiz AG (Auto Kunz AG). Omoda & Jaecoo will be represented by Omoda & Jaecoo Schweiz AG (Zug), whose launch is announced for the fourth quarter of 2026.

These networks provide test drives, delivery, maintenance and parts. Warranty terms vary by brand, model and component: ask the importer for them in writing before purchase.

For a PHEV, the traction battery warranty deserves close attention: the battery is one of the most expensive components to replace. Make sure the conditions (mileage, duration, degradation threshold covered) are clearly specified in the contract.

How to choose your Chinese PHEV in 2026: the criteria that matter

The first criterion is real usage. If your daily journeys are short and you charge at home or at work, a PHEV allows you to drive mostly electric and reduce fuel consumption. If you regularly make long journeys without the possibility of regular charging, the benefit of a PHEV decreases: the combustion engine then takes over and consumption can approach that of a conventional petrol vehicle.

The second criterion is format. The Chinese PHEVs shown in our comparator currently mainly cover the SUV segment (BYD Seal U DM-i, MG HS PHEV, MGS9 PHEV) and that of touring estates (BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring). Compare boot volume, interior space and ground clearance according to your family or professional needs.

The third criterion is the service network. Favour a brand whose importer has a service point near you: this is what guarantees reasonable lead times for maintenance and any warranty repairs. Check that such a service point exists in your canton before buying.

Finally, always compare with comparable equipment and power against established European alternatives: the price difference varies from one model to another and should be verified model by model, not on the basis of a general average.

Pitfalls to avoid before buying

Be wary of direct parallel import from China. A vehicle with Chinese specifications (GB/T charging plug, Mandarin system) requires individual approval and complicates both warranty and resale. A model delivered by the official importer is approved for Switzerland.

Check the brand's status and parts availability. Some brands do not yet have an official network in Switzerland. Before any purchase, ask the importer about lead times for common parts and the cost of periodic maintenance.

Finally, take residual value into account. It is hard to estimate for brands that are still recent on the Swiss market, and on a PHEV it depends on battery condition and mechanical complexity. Ask the importer or dealer in writing whether a buy-back or a lease with a guaranteed residual value is offered, and on what terms.
